13 Mar Natural Gas: The Right Choice for Pool Heaters

Swimming pools are in demand. According to Fixr.com’s latest home features analysis, 85% of experts think a swimming pool as an added feature is important or very important.
Natural gas pool heaters extend the outdoor season
To make the most use of their pool, homeowners often want to extend their swimming season to the cooler months, which is possible with a pool heater. Heaters fueled by natural gas are typically the fastest way to heat a pool and are the only way to heat a pool when the air temperature goes below 55°F. Most models have thermal efficiencies ranging from 80% to 89%.
In general, natural gas pool heaters come in two configurations:
- Burners are positioned horizontally on the bottom of the firebox, heating the air space below the heat exchanger.
- A stack of coiled heat exchanger tubes are wrapped around a single burner in the center of the heater.
Unlike with propane pool heaters, no large tank is required for natural gas models.
Heating capacities range from 100,000 Btu to 400,000 Btu, with in-ground heaters sized according to pool size (gallons and surface area), along with wind factors and average outdoor air temperature. In general, 100,000 Btu is required for every 10,000 gallons. Solar pool covers can reduce heat loss, reducing the heater size and operating cost for the homeowner.
Typical features of a natural gas heater include:
- Pre-mixed combustion technology for ultra-fast heat up
- Easy-to-use digital LED displays and controls
- Lightweight for easy handling and shipping
- Corrosion-free heat exchangers and other rust-resistant components
- Wind resistant design, which eliminates the need for fans and blowers
- Precise flame control with the help of dozens of small flame burners
- Forced draft air system controls combustion and eliminates outside weather variables
- Rustproof and UV-resistant thermoplastic exteriors
Some models are certified for low NOx emissions. These heaters have improved efficiency and a higher rate of heat transfer. Although more expensive, the increased efficiency helps compensate for the extra cost.
Additional natural gas outdoor features
While pools are great for relaxation and outdoor entertaining, other natural gas features can help make the backyard the perfect space for barbecues and fun with friends and family.
- Fireplaces and space heaters. Swimmers will appreciate having these features to warm themselves up when air temperatures drop.
- Outdoor kitchen with natural gas appliances. Think cooktops, grills and pizza ovens fueled with natural gas. Chefs will appreciate the fast and more precise cooking times so they can spend more time in the pool.
- Natural gas lighting for patios. These lights don’t attract insects and provide ambiance for the evening, as well as improve safety.
