97% Clean

Pensacola residents are proving that recycling works when we all do our part.

City of Pensacola Sanitation Services is consistently reporting an impressive 97% clean recyclables rating from the recycling processing center. That means only 3% of the materials collected were contaminated with non-recyclable items.

That is an outstanding result.

In the past, when curbside recycling was included for all residents, contamination rates were significantly higher. Too often, loads intended for recycling were so contaminated that they had to be diverted to the landfill instead.

Today, residents who choose to participate in the City’s recycling program pay an additional $8 per month for the service. That “pay to play” approach is making a real difference.

When people make the conscious decision to invest in recycling, they tend to take the process seriously by rinsing containers, following guidelines, and placing only accepted materials in their recycling carts.

The result is cleaner recycling streams, less waste going to the landfill, and a more effective program for everyone involved.
